That's a good story and I do agree with the 'entitlement' mentality I see in a lot of kids just getting into the workforce. I had a similar story to yours though, where after my first annual review I was praised on my achievements, had exceeded the goals and requirements set out at the beginning of our year for a performance bonus, but was told I would be receiving the standard bonus or less. I was also told that because of HR / financial reasons I could not get more, and mentioned that kind of sucked for us... to which my boss replied that he actually got the max bonus. Needless to say I had my own little temper tantrum and eventually quit. Now working on my own I'm the one responsible for my bonuses, so nobody can screw me out of what I earned... and if I don't make extra money, then I only have myself to blame. And that's the way I like it.

Talk about the stuff they don't teach you in college- For all the people whose merit increases were frozen this year, 2.7% is a lot. Congrats!

Very telling story, and almost assuredly something that our generation faces often. Unfortunately, unlike you most people completely ignore the dose of reality. If we face facts, and there are exceptions to the rule, most of our generation do fall into the 'entitlement' approach.

Is this recession a wake up call? If not, what will it take?
