I agree, with what you posted here, for me,I grew up earning my living myself, and I learnt what means "saving money",especially at high school times, when you have to be with friends or go to camping,...We save to satisfy our feeling of financial and social freedom.

I save so that I can save. I save up my money for large purchases essentially so that I don't have to finance anything. Like my car or boat for example... instead of making crazy payments every month and wasting money on interest, they are not brand spanking new... but they are paid for and there is no wasted money... plus it gives me time and extra cash to save for the next big ticket item.

I agree 100% that naming every dollar makes the biggest difference in how you spend and save. My husband I started our marriage out with that philiosophy and it's paid off in so many big and small ways. We have different savings categories, but we're always proportionately contributing to each one. This has saved us from falling into the trap of using credit cards as a savings account when we've hit a few bumps, allowed us to plan for vacations, christmas, car maitenance and helped us purchase our first home.

This is really interesting, Daniel. I was definitely raised to be a "saver," but you make a good point that it's important to define your goals and decide exactly what you are saving for. Otherwise hard to know if you are saving too much or not enough. I will definitely check this out again in the future!
