Welcome to the new Young and Frugal!
The premise is simple. I send out a Young and Frugal challenge to selected individuals, they accomplish it, document it, and I post it. Then YOU vote for a winner.
What does the winner win? …CASH
Now on to the inaugural challenge!
When coming up with a list of challenge ideas, the following concept seemed to blend the right amount “it’s doable” with the right amount of “but it won’t be a walk in the park,” while at the same time opening peoples eyes up to how expensive dating is. With that said the challenge is as follows:
$40 Date Night
The rules as presented to those who accepted the challenge:
- The date night must include dinner, drinking, and entertainment
- Dinner cannot be at a national restaurant chain, local chains are OK. Don’t eat at home.
- Entertainment cannot be bowling or a movie.
- Drinks must be purchased, not brought, and not shared.
- Transportation costs do not need to be included in the $40.00
- Yes, a date is 2 people.
- If you use a gift card, the amount spent still counts towards the $40 (even if the gift card was gifted).
- Take pictures.
- This isn’t a “who you know” night, so while we all love free stuff and “hook-ups” don’t use them.
- Taxes don’t count in the $40.
For the inaugural $40 Date Night (different challenges will come later), I started by challenging friends in six of the largest and most expensive cities in the US (Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.). Note: this will be one of the few challenges that puts people from different cities up against each other, most future challenges will be amongst people within the same city.
The links for each of the 6 date nights is below along with the voting, please read them and vote on which one you liked the most, whether it be for having fun, most original, best “local,” whichever you feel is the best.
Chicago: The brave man who accepted this challenge is a good friend of mine. Chris, a law student in Chicago, ventured out to learn more about the windy city on his date night. Read about his Chicago date
Dallas -Fort Worth: I challenged Corey and Amanda, a young couple who live on the West side of town. Read about their DFW date
Los Angeles: I called in a personal favor for this one, and I was lucky enough to have Erin Darling, proprietor of The Pop Fix, accept the challenge for LA. Read about her L.A. date
New York: For New York, Jena, a longtime friend, agreed to take on the challenge. Read her New York date
San Francisco: A very close friend and former roommate, Lauren, agreed and snagged a “gal pal” to accompany her in SF. Read their SF “date”
Washington D.C.: Kevin is a political writer, Stephanie is a CPA, together they are a great couple who accepted the DC Challenge. Read their DC date
Below is the poll. It will be open for two weeks. All of the challenge write ups contain a link at the bottom that will lead back here. Please read them all before voting.
Update: The challenge has ended. Congratulations to Chris for winning the Inaugural Young and Frugal Challenge!
