What is amazing about New York City is if you are up for the challenge you can find good deals at local spots and still live the Manhattan dream.
For this challenge I wanted to try new places so I went to Yelp.com, my “go-to” guide to the City. After combing through reviews I had my plan, what better place to test out the $40 date than the West Village, a charming neighborhood where both stars and hipsters call their home.

Our first stop was Corner Bistro, a popular burger restaurant that is a long time gem of W 4th St.. Even on a weeknight there was a 30-minute line to get a seat in the cozy little restaurant. I was starving after work and set on having a fulfilling meal, while saving up for our entertainment stop. We ordered:
- 2 Cheeseburgers at $4.75 a piece
- 2 orders of fries at $2.00 a piece
- 2 McSorley’s at $2.50 a piece
Total from our first stop- $24 (including tip). Quiet a steal in NYC!
On a scale from 1-10 I would give them an 8. I love the authenticity of the restaurant, their friendly service, and awesome prices. However, the burgers were just not as juicy as some of my NYC staples, Shake Shack and J.G. Melons.
Our second stop was Fat Cat, only a few blocks away, where we were going to go watch live Jazz music and play pool. Conveniently close to NYU on the corner of Christopher Street the bar was hopping on a Wednesday night. When we walked in to this underground hot spot it had a “dark and dim” pool bar feel too it, which was perfect for a laid-back weeknight.

When we arrived at the bar we bought PBRs and reserved a pool table. While I attempted to play pool in college at our staple Tuesday night bar, I have never actually played a full game (as embarrassing as that may be), and became hooked after that night! Our breakdown at the bar:
- Cover charge $3 per person
- 2 PBRs at $2.00 each
- $4 for a game of pool (at 9 cents/ per minute/ per person)
Total from the second stop- $16 (including tip)
On a scale from 1-10 I would given them a 10 and definitely come back to play more pool, or maybe even try to foosball tables or the $2 massage chair.
Sticking to a budget on a night out is not easy, especially in the “city of excess”. This made me think twice before ordering something to see how it fit into my overall budget. While I did not miss out on any fun (or food!) I was able to save more money than a usual night out.
